Broccoli is on the Menu
Few children can resist the temptation of eating broccoli flowerettes, which many call “little trees.”
We need to help educators, parents and the community to understand that eight to twenty exposures to a new food is typically what it takes for a child to develop a taste for that new food. A child could try a food this many times within the life cycle of one season’s fruits or vegetables. Natures provides the opportunity for repetition naturally when we eat local and seasonally.
One curious child asked me how that rubber band gets around the broccoli. I have no idea, I told her, let’s find out. I contacted Joe and Doug Perry at J.E. Perry Farms and they sent me this picture. The banding actually happens in the field.

I thought the rubber band was put on the ground and the thing just grew up through it. :)
What an interesting idea!
